Alliance at Buckpool

Thursday 13th March 2014

Yesterday I played at Buckpool in the 1st round of the North east Alliance Championships. I have very fond memories of Buckpool, as I won my very first Professional event there in 1987 with a course record of 64.

Unfortunately, I was unable to get anywhere near 64, I shot 76, 6 over par. What a difference a week makes. Last week I shot 66 at neighbouring Spey Bay.

On th epositive side, I hit 14 greens in regulation, missed only 4 fairways, BUT I managed to take 37 putts on the greens! 8 putts more than last week.

Golf as you all know is a real test of character, and you can become very frustrated when things are not happening for you. I  was happy that I hit all my putts the way I wanted to, but, on this occasion nothing dropped for me.

It was great to see Paul Lawrie play yesterday and he showed his class, to lead the way, with a 5 under par 65 to match his new staff member Greig Hutcheon.

The final round is next Wednesday at Portlethen Golf Club, I have some work to do, to make up 11 shots, bit of a tall order. However, it is a course which yields low scores, my brother Dean won the pro am there with a 10 under par 62 a few years ago, after I gave him a copy of Golf is not a Game of Perfect, a book written by Dr Bob Rotella, the top golf psychologist on the planet. It really is a great book and explains how great golfers think, very Simple to understand and guaranteed to lower your scores. I am off right now to read a few chapters. Will let you know how I fare next week.
