2nd Place at Murcar

Friday 3rd April 2015

I played at Murcar yesterday in my first PGA event of 2015. It was a Senior event (over 45). On a sunny but windy day, my score of 69, 2 under par was a pretty good score. This equated to 38 points( stable ford), 1 pt behind the winner Andrew Oldcorn( former Volvo PGA Champion).

I played solidly going out, 1 birdie at the 3rd( a 6iron to 2feet) and 1 bogey at the toughest hole on the course( the 7th hole), to be out in 36.

Coming home, I birdied the 13th, where I hit a 4iron to 15 feet. I also birdied the 16th, holing from 8feet. On the 17th, I mis hit my tee shot leaving me 185 yards to the pin, in to the wind. I hit a 5 iron to 12 feet and rolled the putt in for another birdie.

On 18, my Drive was down the left side in the semi/ rough 99 yards from the pin. I got a flyer with my approach wedge shot, flying right over the pin to the back edge, leaving a long putt to the hole at the front of the green. My first putt from 70 feet was good, but ran past 6 feet. My putt was good, but it jumped as soon as I hit it, just missing to finish with a bogey.

The key to any good score is a good short game, and avoiding a big score. On the 6th after hitting my 3wood 2nd shot from 230 yards, finishing left of the putting surface, I pitched it to a foot for a par save. On the tough 7th, I pulled my drive close to a bush, I chipped out 40 yards and was able to make a bogey( I see too many amateurs attempting impossible recovery shots)
