First Competitive Round of 2017- The Open

Wednesday 28th June 2017

On Monday 26th June, I took part in the Regional Qualifier for this year Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

The qualifier was played at the majestic Panmure Golf Course, adjacent to Carnoustie Golf Links.

Panmure is a classic links course and had he honour of hosting Ben Hogan for his practice sessions during the 1953 Open held at Carnoustie, the 6th hole is actually called Hogan, after he suggested they could improve this already tough hole by adding a small green side pot bunker.

I scored 75, 5 over par, which was 6 shots too many for one of the 4 spots on offer to advance to the Final Qualifier taking place next Tuesday at Dundonald Links.

This was my first competitive game of golf since July 2016, and my 5th full round of golf for 2017.

My play was a mixture of good and bad, with 14 pars, 3 bogeys and a Double bogey.

When your not playing a lot of golf, it's easy to lose the flow and rhythm of your swing in a competitive environment. To combat a  lack of competitive play, it's imperative to focus hard on routines while practicing, changing clubs from shot to shot and simulating pressure situations.

I will be starting a new training programme for players who are serious about taking their game to the next level, this involves a lot  of on course training as well as supervised practice sessions along with individual practice plans.
