Scottish PGA at Gleneagles

Friday 8th May 2015

The 72 hole Scottish PGA Championships held this week on the beautiful Kings Course at Gleneagles, was reduced to 36 holes, due to torrential rain!

The first round on Sunday was washed out, which meant that the majority of the 136 players in the field would be required to play as many holes as possible on Monday.

I teed off at 10.10, Monday morning, finishing at 3pm with a 6 over par score of 77. Conditions were good for playing with a slight breeeze. I hit a number of scrappy shots and had 35 putts, so was disappointed with my score. After a 3 hour wait, we then teed off for our 2nd round at 6 pm. I hit the ball much better, starting off with a nice birdie at the 1st hole after my 9 iron approach to 12 feet. Again, I missed a number of putts to be out in level par. At 8.45pm, just as we finished the 12th hole, the klaxon went to signify no more play for the day. I was reasonably happy with my 1 over par for the 12 holes played.

After checking in to my hotel in Perth at 10.15pm, I went out to pick up some friuit for breakfast. Eventually, getting to bed for 11.15, I managed to get some sleep before the alarm went at 4am. We had to be back in place on the course for a 7am restart. At 5.30am, I was on the range warming up with another 40 professionals. If you want to play your best, you MUST prepare correctly. I stretch for 30 minutes and hit balls for 15-20minutes, followed by some putts.

Ready for my 7am restart, the conditions now very tough with a strong headwind to contend with. I finished my round in 4 over for a 75.

I was pleased with my game in round 2, and given that my putting was poor and a number of scrappy shots, I would have been much closer to the 3 under winning score. Preparation is key, this means playing a practice round, on this occasion I was not able to do so!
