Annodata match play competition result

Monday 1st July 2019

On Sunday a team of 5 players hosted Blairgowrie in the National Annodata Match play event. Conditions were tricky with a strong wind and a number of strokes were conceded on both sides.

Derek Walker received 8 strokes and had a great battle before ending up all square against a very good opponent. Sandy Innes received 2 strokes and had a topsy turvy match with only one hole between him and his opponent over the course of the match before his birdie attempt on 17 lipped out leaving a 2 and 1 defeat. Phil McBain couldnt get his putter working on the front half before finding some form to edge his match 2 and 1 despite giving away 3 strokes. Craig Wilkinson, even with jet lag and lack of match fitness won 4 and 2 despite giving away 13 strokes. Last out was Ian Still, who was conceding 9 strokes and found an opponent who was on fire and out in level par, meaning Ian lost out 6 and 5.

With the match all square at 2.5 points each it was up to Ian and his opponent as player number 5 to play off for the match. A wayward second shot from Ian (the kind version) seen him play a good recovery to try and put the pressure on as his opponent was on the green in 2, but a tricky downhill putt seen him pull it left. Ian missed his par putt and everyone thought that it was all over, but no, the lad missed his putt as the hole threw out his attempt. Second hole seen the Blairgowrie player overshoot the green  and Ian was about 12 feet to the right and pin high. The approach was good from the opponent and his par putt was a great attempt but just slipped past. Ian stepped up and as the crowd held their breath, the putt ended up in the bottom of the cup for a great birdie and a win for Craibstone.

Great performance from all the players and well done to the team for making it through this second round match, and especially to Ian for keeping his composure.
