30 years and counting

Wednesday 9th November 2016

I almost missed it, September 2016 represented  for me, 30 years  as a PGA Professional. My how time flys.

And so much has changed since I got my first clubs as a 7 year old lad growing up on the finest links course in the world - Carnoustie- that first set of clubs by the way were cut down Hickory clubs- a far cry from today's graphite shafted Junior clubs. In those days, you bought golf balls individually and they all had wrappers on them, there was something very special about that.

At the 1990 European Tour School after 4 years of trying, I got my European Tour Card after 6 rounds of nerve packed golf, and that was using a 1950 John Letters Persimmon Driver, it's not that long ago- fast forward to today and I am hitting the golf ball 20 yards further now than I did when I was playing and training every day back then.

An awful lot has changed since those early days regarding technology , however, the game remains the same, it's still all about getting the ball in the hole in the fewest strokes possible- and that's down to having a great short game , having the ability to manage your game and play the smart shot and most importantly having the correct Mindset- being able to bounce back from adversity, not to be affected by hitting a shot out of bounds, knowing that it's ok to 3 putt- the ability to completely forget about that duck hook on the last tee and totally commit to your next shot- these skills are far more important than having a good looking golf swing -

In coaching a golfer to improve their performance, its all about 3 key factors-  Technical ability , Tactical Ability,  Psychological Ability.

And the good news is that all 3 of these traits can be learned if the student is willing to learn- you have to be coachable in order to be coached- professional golfers do not get golf lessons, they formulate a plan with their coach and work towards their goals, it's all set out first before they start- if you are keen to improve your Performance, email leepro67@jotmail.com
