Lee Vannet's Rules Corner

Tuesday 16th July 2013

Unplayable Ball in a Bunker. Rule 28 states that you can declare your ball unplayable anywhere on the golf course EXCEPT when the ball is in a water hazard.

When faced with an awkward lie in a Bunker, you may deem your ball unplayable.

You have 3 options.

1. Stroke and Distance. Under penalty of 1 shot , play a ball as near to the spot from which you played your last shot.

2. Drop a ball behind the spot where the ball was lying, keeping that point directly between the hole and where your ball was lying, making sure to drop your ball INSIDE the bunker.

3. Drop a ball within 2 club lengths of the point where your ball was lying, NOT nearer the hole. Again inside the Bunker.

A golfer plays a tee shot on a Par 3, her ball finishes in a bunker. She decides to declare her ball unplayable, while still on the Tee.

She plays another ball and hits a fine shot to 5 feet and sinks it for a 4 . This is perfectly within the rules, and also helps to speed up play. However, if this golfer had taken a Bunker Lesson with me, she would probably saved herself 1 shot.
