Northern Open Report

Thursday 3rd June 2021

On Tuesday amd Wednesday this week , I played in the 36 hole Northern Open championships at Portlethen Golf Course.

It was great to get out and play some competitive golf - my 4th and 5th competitive game since October 2020 and just my 8th game in total in the same time frame.

I played very solidly in round 1, scoring 71( 1 under par) with 3 birdies and 2 bogeys and followed that up with a 74 yesterday ( 2 birdies, 4 bogeys) I played pretty solid again reaching the turn in 1 under par. With 6 holes to play I was still 2 under par for the tournament, 3 slack bogeys over the final stretch and I slipped back on to a tie of 29th.

Tournament golf is a different game from casual play, you can't afford to lose focus or make poor decisions - I picked a wrong club on the par 3 8th hole yesterday and after pitching to 4 feet lipped out for bogey and 2 shots which I didn't commit to 100% resulted in 2 further bogeys in my 74. Little things make a big difference and a massive learning tool for golfers is the art of reflection - taking time after your game to really go over every shot you hit and honestly appraise them is critical in improving your game!
